WHAT HAS TRAVIS SCOTT SAID?
According to a statement from a representative for the rapper, Travis Scott will pay for the funeral expenses for the nine people who died at Astroworld Festival on Friday. Additionally, another press release stated Scott will work with the controversial Telehealth BetterHelp to provide free mental health services for one month to those affected by the tragedy. BetterHelp has faced skepticism in the past, as they have sold patients’ information to third parties, Facebook being one.
Attendees, families, and friends of victims must ask themselves: is one month enough time to process and heal from the trauma of Astroworld? Also, why would Scott choose to partner with a disreputable company?
WHAT IS TRAVIS SCOTT REALLY DOING?
Some argue what Travis Scott did is a partnership ploy. Jeff Guenther, co-founder of TherapyDen, posted a video on Twitter explaining how Scott “could be making big bucks from all the referrals that he sends over to BetterHelp.” This begs the question: did Travis Scott really just profit from my pain?
IS TRAVIS SCOTT POSTPONING PAYMENT?
According to a Travis Scott statement found on Click2Houston, “…Travis Scott and his team have been actively exploring routes of connection with each and every family affected by the tragedy through the appropriate liaisons…”
This may seem like a generous gesture, but this means Scott still hasn’t been in contact with any family of the dead. The statement goes on to say that Travis wants to “…provide aid to them as soon as possible, but wants to remain respectful of each family’s wishes on how they’d best like to be connected.”
Is “remain respectful” just a nice way of saying “waiting for families to demand payment?” Is Travis trying to postpone payment to evade paying for the funerals altogether? Furthermore, the statement fails to address whether or not Scott will cover the entirety of the funeral expenses.
